Apolonio “Al” Romo – a Tucson artist

PictureApolonio "Al" Romo (1919 - 2013)
A year ago I met a great local Tucson artist, Apolonio “Al” Romo, and then he died.  I met Al during a University of Arizona neighborhood spring clean-up project, and Al’s house was one of the clean-up projects.  At the time, I only knew that the home belonged to an older gentleman who needed help.  While we were working, Al came out of his house to see how we were doing and to chat with some of the students.  Later he came out to his front porch holding a remarkable watercolor of a scene from the Altar Valley with Baboquivari Peak in the background.  I was immediately captivated not only with the watercolor technique but also the subject matter. Lindy and our dogs used to enjoy camping in our VW camper during weekend visits to the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge.  We always enjoyed the peace of the valley and the view of the iconic peak in the Baboquivari mountains, an hour or so west of Tucson.  I asked Al if I could buy the painting, and he quoted a price too low.  So we finally agreed upon a price that seemed fair for what I thought was watercolor by a talented amateur artist.  Later, when I realized his modesty concealed his real fame as one of Tucson’s distinguished local artists, I went back to see if I could give him more for his painting.  He refused and seemed satisfied that I enjoyed his work.  After several visits to his home, I eventually learned that he was a contemporary of the more famous Ted DeGrazia with a history of doing art for organizations and charities in the Tucson area.  I also learned from an on-line 2004 article by Salomón R. Baldenegro (“Al Romo is a work of art (and paints them, too)”, that Al was considered:

PictureAl Romo on his front porch with his watercolor of the Altar Valley and Baboquivari Peak.
…a great local Mexican-American artist…best known for his renderings of small Southwestern and Mexican villages and the downtown Tucson barrios that were destroyed during the urban renewal of the 1960s, as well as for his desert landscapes. His work has been described as “lighthearted and nostalgic, yet ornamented with honest realism.”

If you’ve been to San Xavier Mission, you’ve experienced his skills. He helped in the restoration. His mural commissions include St. Mary’s Hospital, Casa Molina North restaurant and the offices of Surgical Associates. His work also graces the private collections of many prominent Tucsonans and of former first lady Pat Nixon. Many charitable groups have raised funds by auctioning paintings donated by Romo.

I enjoyed visiting Al to see his modest studio in the front bedroom of his house.  The room was filled with paint and sketches in progress.  Although he was 94 years old, he became energized showing me his work and how to manipulate his Apple computer.  His house was full of cigarette smoke and the detritus of a life in decline, but with his beloved Chihuahua at his side, he was cheerful and seemingly settled with the memories of a long life.  He taught me the value of drawing unpretentious local scenes that became majestic with simple watercolor washes.  His art seemed fresh and easily rendered.  Al had that rare talent of knowing just when to stop before a painting became over-worked.  I wish I could have spent more time with him, but the painting that he allowed me to purchase a year ago, still teaches me.

Thanks Al - Apolonio Hernandez Romo.

UPDATE: September 2019
Remarkably, I continue to get emails of inquiry and thanks for the Al Romo article (Blog).  It is certainly the most popular article I have posted based on all the emails I've received since the original posting in March 2014.  Al was clearly a beloved artist in Southern Arizona and this poster I received from "Sue's Laptop" is one of the more touching memories of his time creating art.  The note from Sue indicates that the solo retrospective had a dual purpose: to raise funds for the restoration of the historic San Pedro Chapel in the Old Fort Lowell Historic District and to help Al with his "retirement fund".  According to Sue it was a successful event and "a fabulous example of community support."

I've also attached a snapshot of one of the Al Romo paintings that she bought at the event - titled: "Home of Magdelana".

Thanks Sue for sharing the information about Al's community support and a couple of his paintings.

Steve,
Excellent work on the Al Romo blog! My first impression of the work was “what a beautiful way to handle a junk yard.” The coffee pot sitting on a surface with a highlighted background suggesting that it was still in use; the transparent boxes providing no resistance to the color from behind; blue shadows telling of two layers of depth. The more you look at it the more interesting it gets!

Alice - Although I only met your uncle recently, he was clearly a Tucson treasure. You should feel very proud of his contribution to the Tucson arts. Many thanks for letting me know that you found my blog and for your appreciative note. Like you, I wish I had spent more time with him. I always point out his home when I pass it. My sister happened to be Al's next door neighbor. My family had the true pleasure of getting to know him over the next few years. Ironically, that chihuahua is now ours as we got Cisco for him as a guard dog and companion. (We would walk Cisco and feed him, as he was unable too) Al was truly an awesome guy. He became a pseudo grandfather to me because mine died when I was very young. He used to come over and we would watch Nascar and my parents would grill, then he would take smoke breaks outside with his palm malls every hour or so. My mother and sister were especially close to him. What I do remember is his wisdom and humor. He had many mixed thoughts about life, being a WWII veteran. He always gave me advice. He even attended my high school graduation last year and gave me the most hilarious card. It makes me smile just thinking about it. My last visit to him in the hospital a few days before I left to college, we brought Cisco who sat at his bed side. Although weak, he still was cracking jokes. The last words he said to me was to go find his girlfriend in Seattle and he winked. He will forever be in my heart.
Thank you for writing such a beautiful article about him. He is a true treasure.

When my husband passed in 1996 he left me 3 of Mr. Romo's early
watercolors. that his aunt Eleanor Rhodes of Douglas, AZ had gifted him when she passed. My husband told me she had been a artist friend of Mr. Romo. She also did some watercolors. Does anyone know of her background?
I am so sorry to hear about his passing. What a truly lovely life
he had with his art work and all of the individuals he met throughout his life.
Thank you Stephen for your time, effort and love for a man who was
so talented and loved. He was blessed in many ways.

I am a photojournalist and a collector or Mr.Romo's paintings . It was an honor to know him and Hazel . We met at the St.Phillips art show years ago and I often visited his studio where Trader Joe is now located on Campbell . After the artist studios were purchased , Al had a studio on Prince where Phyliss had her antique shops .
Al Romo is a Tucson treasure . A one man show at the Ft Lowell church gave him many accolades ... So deserved !

Linda - I was so pleased to hear of your connection to Al. Of course I did not have a chance to meet Hazel, but I did treasure the brief time I had with Al in his little studio/house on Euclid. I wish someone would put together a commemorative web site of his work, since the web seems to have so little information on him. Thanks again for your posting and for adding a bit more information on his legacy.

Al was like my Grandfather to me, he was a big influence in my life. He gave a positive recommendation to the Navy recruiters that visited him, opening the doors to my current success. His artwork has always been an inspiration to our family, and everyone else that has been able to experience it. If you had the pleasure to hear the inspiration of any piece of his artwork, it would bring an extra special admiration of the story that he brought to his depiction of life. Mr. Romo is a very special person, and had brought so much joy to the lives of all that have had the pleasure to encounter his life tales!!! I love you Al, and my prayers are with you, and anyone that did not have the pleasure to meet you will hopefully feel your personality through your art work!!! God Bless your Soul!!! I love you Mr. Romo...luv Ysidro

So happy to hear that others feel the way I do regarding the talent of Al Romo he was a inspiration to alot of people. He was a wonderful Tata to my children. We would go visit him and Hazel at the shop almost every weekend, I couldn't wait to see what he was painting next. After his passing we had boxes of his belonging, I have so many treasures left by him, I could make a museum. Not only did he love art but was also a great photographer I have a collection of cameras and photos that are priceless. And the art work I've been organizing it at getting it ready for a viewing. But last April I meet a Artist that knew Al and told me he was his mentor. I was very impressed with his art and he told be that Al should not be forgotten. So I will make sure he won't be. Please support and see the artwork of Francisco Norzagaray at the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun on April 2-16 from 10 til 4. I will have a few painting of Al's to share.

Hello, My mother, Ruth Chadwick, as Director of Volunteers at St Mary's Hospital in the 60's, commissioned Mr Romo to paint his mural there. When it was completed, he painted a large oil portrait of myself, for my mother, which I still have. It was painted in 1969, I believe. Hello Mr. BINGHAM,

I have been a longtime friend and admirer of Al due to my Aunt Marilyn Ball of Tucson being one of his best friends. MArilyn passed away a few years before Al, but over the years I have 5 of his paintings that were gifted to me. One is a horse in the desert, another a mission watercolor, a desert scene, and aTucson cottagewatercolor. My pride and joy is what appears to be a self portrait of Al on the beach here in the San Clemente area. He would drive over several times with Aunt Marilyn for a visit to stay with mt Mom. One time Al went to Disneyland with us. He was such a sweet man and I treasure his gifts of art to myself and my Mom. P,ease let me know if I can email you photos of his work. Thank you for this blog and the ability to be able to share with his family and fans. He is surely missed.

Hi there. I'm reaching out to friends and family of Al (and Hazel) because Hazel was my father's sister. I don't know much about him and that side of the family as he wasn't a big part of my life, but I'm interested in learning more about the Wisenbakers, including any pictures anyone could send my way so I could start putting faces to names. I know Hazel had several siblings, including Barbara, Cathy, Beatrice, Joseph aka Laurence (my father) and a brother who died in the 70s named Brennan or Brannon. Please email me at [email protected] with any info you could pass my way. Thanks.

I first met Al at the Tuscon Mariachi Fest back in the late 80's I believe. In the middle of the Art Show was "Otomi Mother"...a painting of his. I wept when I saw it - it was so beautiful I couldn't afford it. The following year, as he was setting up his work for the show, I asked him if he still had the painting, done in pastels. "Somewhere...maybe in my garage" He brought it the next day, and I bought it. I had it professionally framed - Gallery worthy. I love it. He said, "I didn't spray it with a fixative, or the color is lost"...I've left it that way. In my brief meeting, he was special, unique, and a man of qualifying humility.

Hi, So glad to find information onAl Romo! I was in high school at CDO when my dad suggested we take painting lessons in Al's studio. He helped me paint a piece of a horse and cowboy that a friend asked me to render. He only would take a small amount for lessons. I think he was an artist who wanted to help others and never have the spot light. He was quiet and humble. I shall never forget him.I recently have started painting in watercolors. What fun! Take you for listening, JH

I believe I have one of Als watercolors.. I think so primarily because it is signed ROMO and has some characteristics of some of his other work...his choice of brighter colors and the skies that re so well done.
I will try to send you a photo of it.

Hello: I love his work. I have a water color done in 1978. I'd love to send you a photo. I'm curious to know the place and subject matter. It depicts a church or mission scene with Nuns and 4 men with masks holding red and white striped hockey sticks?

Hello. We acquired a Romo dated 1977, El Tiradito. It was interesting and fun to find information on Mr. Romo and the story behind the shrine. Would love to see and perhaps purchase more of his work. Thanks for your site.

Brenda - my apologies for not replying earlier. I continue to be amazed at how many Al Romo fans are out there. If you want to send me a good image of your 1977 Romo painting, I'll include it in the above collection for others to enjoy. You can send it to me at: [email protected]

I was introduced to Al Romo by my in-laws who knew him for many years. I have several of his paintings. I used to go sit in his studio and talk with him and his wife. I remember one time while he made a watercolor painting of my young son expressing his disappointment that he cannot work in oil anymore. Would you like to see his painting?

My husband and I lived next door to Al and Hazel from 1995-2001. We loved them dearly, and were sorry to lose track of them as we moved across the country. We were very sad when we returned to Tucson in 2015 to learn that he and Hazel had passed. We have several paintings that he gave to us as gifts, as well as one that my husband commissioned him to do of our house on Euclid.
Al was truly a class act, as was his "Georgian Peach" Hazel. So lucky to have had them in our lives.

Thanks for your wonderful tribute to Al. I only knew him for a very short time while volunteering with the neighborhood to help maintain his yard. The blog did generate a lot of interest so he seemed to have a large fan base. He also had a wonderful chihuahua which I believe is now with a family member. I never met Hazel. Thanks again for your comment!

My husband and I inherited 5+ Romo paintings circa 1970s. We have a few that we would like to sell since the painted images don’t blend well with our decor. Can you help me, or let me know who I may contact? Thanks for your time. Jana

Hello,
I knew Romo when his studio was at Campbell and River Road. He, my mother, and I used to have lunch at the Casa Molina that was there. My mother took watercolor lessons from him because at that time, he said he was allergic to oils. She bought quite a few paintings of his, and if anyone knows of any places to sell a few or people who would be interested in acquiring some, I’d love to hear from you.

Marianne - thanks for your post. You added a bit of information that I did not know--that he was allergic to oil paints! Hope you get some replies regarding the paintings you have. If you'd like me to post some images of a select few of your paintings, I've done that for others--see above update at the end of the blog.

I’m 42 years old and my parents were friends with Romo. Quite a few of his paintings hang in their house in Tucson. I remember them taking me to his studio when I was a kid and the floor being covered with dirt, but not much more. My parents told me he was poor his entire life but found great success late in his life with his artwork.

Hi There--I won a framed watercolor from a raffle about 15 years ago. The subject is what looks like a chapel with a cross at the top and what looks like an iron fence around it. There is a lot of the color green in it. It is signed A. Romo. I love it and have had it displayed in my home since then. After reading Mr. Romo's story, it is even more meaningful to me.
